Student Services Spotlight: Career Services
This article is part of a series highlighting our Student Services offices and what they can do for you. For information about all HFC student services, please visit the Student Services section of our website.
HFC Career Services helps students and recent graduates clarify and attain their professional goals.
“We offer comprehensive tools, resources, and services to assist you in discovering your passions and using them to build an extraordinary career. Take advantage of our career discovery and job preparation resources, as well as connect with employers on-campus and online,” said HFC Career Services Officer Chad Austin.
The Career Services Office is in A-113 on the first floor of the Learning Success Center (LSC) (Building A on the main campus). Its hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Career Services team members are available for both in-person and virtual meetings. In-person and virtual appointments can be scheduled during regular business hours. Note: The Career Services team will need to move out of the A building when renovations begin in May 2026. Stay tuned for their new location.
“We offer alumni access to our services, events, and the chance to meet with staff if they wish,” said Austin.
Career Services can even help you determine what career path might interest you. Start as soon as you enroll at HFC. Do not wait until you are ready to graduate!
Many services available to help you advance professionally
Career Services provides a full suite of career advising services (both in-person and online) including:
- Writing résumés and cover letters
- Assisting with job search and interview techniques
- Teaching professional etiquette
- Offering training sessions and seminars
- Providing a professional clothing closet that is free to HFC students
“Your social skills and ability to network effectively are just as valuable as any technical skills that you develop,” said Austin.
Since 2022, Career Services has utilized Handshake, a software platform that connects students with employers in a simple and effective way. Handshake has been well-received by students and employers alike.
Career Services also oversees the Cooperative Education (Co-Op) program at HFC. Throughout the academic year, Career Services hosts workshops to hone your skills at writing a résumé and how to present yourself at job interviews. Its signature event is the HFC Career Expo, where students meet, network, and even interview with potential employers from multiple fields from all over the state of Michigan and beyond.
One unique feature about Career Services is it maintains a closet of new and gently used professional clothing, including dress shoes, button-down shirts, ties, blouses, and so on. Students may select professional attire at no charge. Career Services always welcomes clothing donations.
You can find a wealth of job search resources, a schedule of upcoming events, a list of Career Services staff members, and more on the Career Services website. Services are open to both students and alumni.
