Student Services Spotlight: “Handshake” student career services tool
Since 2022, HFC Career Services has used Handshake, a software platform that connects students with employers in a simple and effective way.
“What makes Handshake stand out is it’s easy for students to use,” said HFC Career Services Officer Chad Austin. “Handshake was created by two Northern Michigan University students who modeled it after social media.”
How to use Handshake
Signing up is simple:
- Download the app to your phone.
- Create a profile and get personalized job recommendations.
- Meet with employers to learn more about company culture and open positions.
- Apply for a job in as few as two clicks.
- Sign up for HFC career-related events using the app.
Uploading your résumé to your profile will auto-populate it, so you can use it as often as you want to apply for jobs.
How to customize Handshake
By setting specific parameters to your profile, Handshake will allow you to:
- Match your needs and desires with employers where you would like to work.
- Schedule appointments and job interviews.
- Attend seminars and webinars catered to your career path.
“The more you use it, the better customized it will be for you. Once you fill out your profile completely, it will connect you to job opportunities in the cities that interest you,” said Austin. “Employers actively use Handshake. It’s a national database, which means you can seek jobs outside the local region. Handshake serves our students well.”
