Small rainbow flags in grass

In celebration of Campus Pride Month, members of HFC’s SAGA Club will install a temporary display of small pride flags on Tuesday, April 12, at 1:30 p.m. (weather permitting) outside the Reuther Liberal Arts Building (Bldg. K) by the quad area.

The group requested and received permission to post this temporary display from College administration. The display will be up through the month of April.

The quad area is the open area in the middle of the main campus adjacent to nearly all of the main campus classroom buildings. It connects these buildings:

  • Eshleman Library (B)
  • Facilities Services (D)
  • Technology Building (E)
  • MacKenzie Fine Arts Center (F)
  • Health Sciences Education Center (G)
  • Science Building (J)
  • Liberal Arts Building (K)

The rainbow flag’s origins

The rainbow flag is a symbol of the LGBTQ+ community and its social movements. Its colors reflect the diversity of the LBGTQ+ community. The rainbow flag began to be used as a symbol of gay visibility and pride as early as the late 1970s in San Francisco. It is the creation of the late artist Gilbert Baker. Eventually, the rainbow flag became common at LGBTQ+ events worldwide.

About SAGA

Founded in 2017, SAGA is the Sexuality and Gender Acceptance club. This student-led organization’s mission is to support students in their lives as LGBTQ+ individuals and allies. HFC Student Success Navigator Troy Gibson serves as the SAGA faculty advisor.

“We have been trying to bring the rainbow colors to HFC for a long time,” said Gibson. “This year, we are able to place rainbow flags in the ground for Campus Pride Month. This is a great opportunity to show your pride and meet others. Please join us at the doors outside Building K facing west toward Building F at 1:30 p.m.”

All are welcome to attend and support this event. For questions or more information, contact Gibson at trgibson3@hfcc.edu.
