HFC will host a First-Generation College Celebration on Friday, November 7, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Community Rooms of the Welcome Center (Building WC on the main campus). Senator Darrin Camilleri and Dearborn Mayor Abdullah H. Hammoud are scheduled to speak.

“HFC will celebrate students and alumni who are the first in their families to go to college,” said HFC Program Advisor Ashlei Chears. “This is one of my favorite events.”

Camilleri will deliver a keynote address. Another highlight will be an interactive conversation between HFC Interim President Dr. Lori Gonko and Hammoud. There will also be a student panel of first-generation HFC students and alumni.

HFC alumna Tiffany Williams, owner of Taste Tiff’s Catering in Detroit, will speak about being a first-generation college student. Her catering company will also serve brunch at this celebration.

A national First-Generation College Celebration takes place every year on November 8 on college campuses across the nation. This day honors the anniversary of the Higher Education Act of 1965, which was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the HEA, which is part of the reason colleges and universities are able to offer students federal financial aid.

“I am thrilled that HFC is hosting another First-Generation College Celebration for our students, alumni and community,” said Chears. “It's a great chance to recognize the hard work and accomplishments of our first-generation students. This year, we're especially lucky to have Senator Camilleri and Mayor Hammoud joining us to share their stories and insights.”

This celebration is free and open to the public; you do not have to be a first-generation student. Check-in begins at 10:45 a.m. Space is limited, so please register at the link above by Monday, October 27.
