HFCā€™s Black Male and Quintessential Unique Essence of Ebony Necessary Sisters (QUEENS) Focus Group (BMQFG) meets Wednesdays from noon to 2:00 p.m. in Room N-011 in the lower level of the Campus Safety Building (Building N on the main campus).

You have the option of attending in person or on Zoom. Here is the Zoom link

The BMQFG Winter 2024 meeting schedule is:

  • January 24, 31
  • February 7, 14, 21, 28
  • March 13, 20, 27
  • April 3, 10, 17, 24
  • May 1

These are drop-in meetings. You can show up at any time and leave at any time. Come as you are. Typical meetings include introductions and individual updates, followed by discussions of issues that matter to members of the group, and sometimes focused discussion / learning about many topics. These can include cultural or historical topics; opportunities for personal and professional growth, internships, conferences, out-of-area College or cultural visits; and much more. The atmosphere is relaxed, very supportive, and open. It is intended to build relationships and to provide information, resources, and support to all students.

HFC sociology instructor Dr. Kalvin DaRonne Harvell is the faculty advisor for BMQFG. Chardin Claybourne and Dr. Courtney Matthews are the co-faculty advisors.

The group's purpose is to challenge and change the accepted narrative regarding Black academic success. It provides an atmosphere in which students are comfortable, and through strength, can learn to deal with discomfiture. It exposes them to opportunities within and outside HFC to help them grow academically and professionally.

BMQFG also has three special events scheduled for the Winter 2024 semester, including:

  • Every Wednesday in February: Black History Month Programming (occurs during regularly scheduled meetings)
  • Friday, April 19: Black Male Retention and Success Conference
  • TBD: Rites of Passage Graduation Ceremony

All HFC students are welcome and invited to attend BMQFG meetings. For questions or more information about BMQFG, contact any of the following:
