HFC Academic Advisor Kelsey Taylor enjoyed working with students during her own college days, so higher education is a natural fit for her.

“It’s always been a pleasure to work with students. My first job after college was working in academic advising,” she said. “I’m looking forward to working with my new colleagues and getting to know everyone as we work to support our students!”

Valuable addition to the advising team

Born in China, Taylor was adopted when she was 13 months old and came to the United States. An only child, she lives in Plymouth. After graduating from Plymouth High School, she earned her bachelor’s degree in multimedia journalism from Alma College.

Taylor joined HFC in July. She reports to HFC Interim Director of Academic Advising Jennifer Markin.

“In her short time at HFC, Kelsey has proven herself to be a valuable addition to the advising team,” said Markin. “She is student-centered and committed to supporting the success of STEM students here at HFC and in their next steps after graduation.

Wonderful to work together with students on their educational journey

Taylor’s duties include talking to students about what classes they need to take in order to graduate and either enter the workforce or transfer to a 4-year university, connect them to the many student resources HFC offers, and support them during their time at HFC.

“It’s never too early to start thinking about where you want to go after you graduate from HFC!” she said.

Her advice to students is to always register early for classes.

“I really enjoy helping students succeed,” said Taylor. “It’s wonderful when we can work together to see what their path will look like and actively shape it.”

An HFC connection paves the way

Prior to HFC, Taylor worked at Crown Staffing Solutions in Dearborn as an administrative assistant for 10 months. She also worked in academic advising as a front desk clerk at Schoolcraft College for a year.

Taylor learned about HFC after talking to her friend, HFC Student Activities Administrative Assistant Kayla Collins.

“Kelsey is an intelligent, passionate, and skilled individual with a bright future ahead of her,” said Collins. “She is incredibly adept with the procedures of higher education. She has an amazing ability to present the fundamentals when advising while maintaining a supportive, friendly, and constructive energy. We are lucky to have her.”
