The Writing Center is open for the Fall semester

You are invited to visit the Writing Center

The HFC Writing Center (Room A-201) inside the Learning Lab on the second floor of the Learning Success Center (LSC) (Building A on the main campus), will open on Monday, August 31 for the Fall 2026 semester.

HFC English instructor Dr. Chelsea Lonsdale is the director of the Writing Center, which is a hub for all things writing at the College. It is a collaborative and relational space where writers, readers, and texts can coexist and get to know each other.

The Writing Center provides one-on-one support for writers of all levels, at any stage of the writing process, and in all courses. Non-academic writing is also welcome. The Writing Center has experienced respondents (personnel) available both in-person in A-201 and virtually through the online scheduling system, WCOnline.

The Writing Center’s in-person hours for the Fall 2026 semester are:

  • Monday through Thursday: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Friday: 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

For in-person sessions, appointments can be scheduled in advance using WCOnline. Respondents can also meet with students on a drop-in basis.

The Writing Center’s virtual hours for the Fall 2026 semester are:

  • Wednesday through Thursday: 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

For virtual sessions, appointments must be scheduled in advance using WCOnline. Both synchronous (online) and asynchronous (eTutoring) appointments are available.

“The Writing Center is meant to be a space that helps writers develop a fuller understanding of the academic, social, and cultural effects of writing,” said Lonsdale. “Whether you love writing or find it challenging, we’re here to support you academically and personally. We see the Writing Center as a space where writing happens, whether that’s through one-on-one sessions focused on a specific task, or as a place where writers gather to be in good company.”

What can you expect from the Writing Center?

  • We’ll give you individualized attention: Respondents typically work with students one-on-one!
  • You’ll be expected to interact and participate: Sessions are conversational and collaborative.
  • We’ll provide a welcoming environment: The Writing Center is for everybody, no matter how strong or weak your writing skills are.
  • You’ll leave with strategies and resources that you can use in the future.
  • Keep your expectations reasonable: We can’t promise you an A paper, but you will feel inspired, capable, and more confident in your writing abilities.

Respondents can meet with you whether you’re just getting started (even if you haven’t written anything at all yet), somewhere in the middle, or near the end of a writing project. To get the most out of your session, please bring your assignment instructions or prompt and some questions or goals for the time we have together.
