HFC welcomes Kayli Hessbrook, who brings a global perspective to Student Activities
HFC’s Student Activities Associate Kayli Hessbrook always thought she wanted to be a teacher.
"Because I’m the oldest of four, I’ve always been around younger children and have been teaching them. I was a mother hen. I also was a babysitter in my teens, so it came as no surprise that I wanted to be a kindergarten teacher," recalled Hessbrook, of Detroit.
Hessbrook is a graduate of Carson City-Crystal High School. She earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Central Michigan University, where she studied abroad in Ireland for a summer program. She is certified to teach grades P-5.
Hessbrook has been in education since 2019, in global settings. She taught kindergarten in China for four years, and in Thailand for one.
"I’ve always loved traveling and going abroad," she said. "Getting to live and teach abroad was such an incredible experience, and I’ll cherish it forever. It was an amazing time in my life. If it weren't for my family, I probably would have stayed overseas, where I saw the beauty of many cultures."
Switching from elementary ed to higher ed
After her return to the United States, Hessbrook began exploring higher education. She worked in the CMU Office of International Students and Scholars, where she got to use her international experience to connect with students.
"I was looking for more growth in my career and wanted to be in a bigger area," said Hessbrook. "I never thought I’d be in higher education, because I’ve always liked working with children. But here I am, and I’m loving it so far!"
Former HFC Admissions Associate Leonard Poole, whom she met at a mutual friend’s wedding several years ago, recommended that Hessbrook apply to HFC. She joined HFC in mid-August.
"Over the past five years, I’ve had the privilege of mentoring Kayli and watching her grow into an incredible young professional," said Poole. "Kayli brings intentionality, creativity, and purpose to everything she does. Her experience in higher education and international education has given her a unique ability to adapt, connect with diverse populations of students, and create experiences that support student growth."
Eager to make a difference in students’ lives
Hessbrook serves as advisor of the National Society of Leadership and Success, assists HFC’s other student organizations, and plans many events and programs on campus. She also oversees the Hawks’ Nest.
"The people here have been very welcoming. I really enjoy working with Director of Student Activities Dr. Cassandra Fluker. It’s been a little hectic, starting at the beginning of the semester, but that gave me a good start," she said. "Our job is to help students find their place on campus and find their home. They see us as a safe space and confide in us."
Added Fluker: "Kayli brings valuable skills, a positive attitude, and energy to support the college experience at HFC. She is eager to make a difference in the lives of students. I look forward to her contributions to student success as the semester progresses."
Hessbrook can see herself remaining in higher education and eventually overseeing a student activities office.
"Kayli has a rare talent for designing and coordinating meaningful events for students," said Poole. "She has a unique gift of connecting with any student. She listens to students' needs, helps them seek solutions, and turn their ideas into positive experiences – no matter what community they are a part of. Kayli has jumped right into her role, running the Hawks’ Nest, becoming an advisor for NSLS, and more. Her dedication to global perspective and genuine passion for helping students make her a remarkable professional, and HFC is lucky to have her."
