The welcoming environment and the diversity of HFC attracted Craig Karfis to the College.

"The work setting at HFC wasn’t corporate, it's more help-focused and more people-oriented," said Karfis. "I've found my co-workers to be very friendly and welcoming."

Born in Taylor, Karfis grew up in Livonia. He lives in Dearborn Heights with his cat, Bananas. He is a graduate of Franklin High School in Livonia. He completed coursework in psychology at Schoolcraft College and the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

Prior to coming to the College, Karfis was a senior economic development specialist at the City of Dearborn for over a year. He previously worked at Rocket Mortgage in Detroit as a lending specialist for a year and at Larry’s Foodland in Livonia as frozen foods manager for 13 years.

Dedicated, customer-service-oriented

Karfis joined HFC as the new Buyer Associate in the College Store (Building C on the main campus) in April. His duties include:

  • Ordering merchandise and supplies
  • Ordering uniforms for Culinary Arts students
  • Pricing and shelving products
  • Assembling drafting kits
  • Working the register

"I like being able to help people out and find the products they need," said Karfis. "Sometimes, I have to be the bearer of bad news and tell them that we've sold out of the popular merchandise. I enjoy bringing products into the College Store. Having worked in retail, it's fun to be able to get back into that mindset."

The College Store interim manager Mary Shearer has been impressed with Karfis' performance in such a short period of time.

"Craig did a fabulous job of redoing the clothing area," said Shearer. "He shows great attention to detail, and he's a dedicated employee who is very customer-service-oriented."
