HFC basketball player Teona Gillette named MCCAA Player of the Week
Freshman Teona Gillette, a member of the Henry Ford College Women’s Basketball Team, has been named the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) Eastern Conference Player of the Week twice in the past two months: December 9, 2025 and January 13.
“It feels great!” said Gillette, of Detroit, the team captain. “I was surprised that I won twice, but I know my game speaks for itself.”
“There’s too much love for the game”
Born in Detroit, Gillette is the youngest of six. She started playing basketball when she was 8. She graduated from Harper Woods High School, where she was a member of the basketball, softball, track, and cross-country teams.
Gillette is attending HFC on a basketball scholarship. She is majoring in sports medicine and plans to graduate in 2027. Afterward, she will transfer to Wayne State University, where she will continue her education, and hopefully, her basketball career.
“I want to become a personal trainer or a physical therapist. I love sports and want to help other athletes, especially when my playing days are done. I don’t think I’ll ever stop playing, though – there’s too much love for the game,” said Gillette. “My dad is my inspiration. He’s always pushed me to do better even when I didn’t reach my goals – and because I want to excel.”
Recognition for her strong performance
In the January 10 game against Wayne County Community College District, which the Hawks won 71-69, Gillette posted a dominant double-double of 27 points and 14 rebounds in the key conference win. Her performance led to being named the Player of the Week for the second time.
Gillette earned the same recognition earlier this season, showing a strong performance against Lorain County Community College on December 5, 2025, a game the Hawks won 77-70. She had a double-double of 26 points and 13 rebounds, adding five assists and five steals.
Coach Chuck Perez, who is in his second season with the Hawks, expressed his pride in Gillette.
“Teona has been playing great!” said Perez. “She is a great teammate who has a strong work ethic. She prepares every day to improve her skills. The coaching staff knows that she’s going to bring 100% every day. She is the motor that makes this team go. Teona deserves this recognition!”
