Golfer Sennett wins MCCAA championship
HFC golfer Billy Sennett, Jr. has had an outstanding season during his first year on the HFC golf team.
On April 29, he topped the field of 65 players to win the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) Conference Championship. On May 5, Sennett and fellow HFC golfer Landen Doughtery both earned spots on the 2026 Region XII Division II Men’s Golf All-Region Team.
“Winning the MCCAA Conference Championship was such a great feeling for me and for my teammates. I was hitting the ball really well out there, and I just kept the same strong, positive mindset the whole way through,” said Sennett. “It was really great for Landen and me to make the All-Region Team. We wish that we could have placed even higher on the leaderboard to make nationals, but we were pretty happy with how we played.”
Added HFC golf coach Jake Kieronski: “The golf team recently competed in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Regional Championship at the Bedford Valley Golf Course in Battle Creek, finishing fifth overall. This marks one of the team’s strongest finishes in many years.”
Tremendous work ethic and strong focus
Born in Detroit, Sennett is a lifelong Flat Rock resident and the eldest of two. He graduated from Woodhaven High School in Brownstown Township, where he played baseball for two years and golf for four years -- three of them on the varsity team.
“My grandpa introduced me to golf when I was really young, but I was more serious about baseball at the time,” recalled Sennett. “Later on, I realized that I could be a better golfer than a baseball player.”
Sennett is working toward his associate degree in general studies at the College. He will graduate by the end of 2027.
“I decided to come to HFC to get an education and play for the golf team. The best part about attending HFC is the bonds that I've created with my coaches and teammates that I'll have forever. I plan to try out and play golf for my transfer university's team,” he said.
HFC Assistant Athletic Director Steve Brown highlighted Sennett’s performance on the golf course.
“Billy is an outstanding golfer with a tremendous work ethic and strong focus,” said Brown. “He competes at a very high level, continues to improve every day, and has all the qualities needed for a very bright future in golf.”
