Three students brainstorming together.

The Breakthrough Challenge is a week-long entrepreneurial mindset competition open to all HFC students. You can be in any major.

Register for the Breakthrough Challenge by October 31
There are only 32 spots available. Please sign up today so we can get an accurate headcount for teams and food.

Note: students may sign up as individuals, or together. Teams will have four people, so you can sign up with up to 3 other students. We will fill in the teams based on the number of registrants. The registration form allows you to designate your other team members if they also register.

How this fun challenge works

  1. Two Dearborn businesses will each present a real-world challenge they’re facing.
  2. There will be eight competing HFC students teams of four students each, supported by a volunteer coach
  3. The student teams will work on one of the business challenges (so, four teams will work on each challenge).
  4. Each team will get one week to research, ideate, and pitch their best solution after the week concludes.

The Breakthrough Challenge will be held on two separate days in the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Hub (Room E-146) on the first floor of the Technology Building (Building E on the main campus):

  • "Breakthrough Challenge Day 1: Challenge Reveal" will be on Thursday, November 5, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.
  • "Breakthrough Challenge Day 2: Final Pitch Competition" will be on Thursday, November 12, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Prizes will be awarded

  • $125 for each member of the winning team
  • $100 MVP per team
  • Free swag

“HFC business instructor Selina Thomas will facilitate lessons for the students on how to pitch their ideas. HFC Workforce Development Program Manager Cassandra Myers will help the students learn about working on a team. HFC Career Services Officer Chad Austin will work with the students about putting this experience on their résumés and transfer applications,” said HFC business instructor MariAnn Apley.

No experience required! Bring your energy and open mind

The Breakthrough Challenge is open to all HFC students. No experience is required. Only 32 spots are available, so please register by Saturday, October 31. Pizza and soft drinks will be provided at both events.

Whether you win or not, you will gain valuable experience and an accomplishment for your résumé/CV!
