What is the Dr. Henry J. Bowers Focus Group, and who should attend?

HFC’s Dr. Henry J. Bowers Focus Group hosts weekly meetings for the Winter 2026 semester in Room N-011 in the basement of Building N on the main campus.

You can attend the meetings in-person or virtually. Meetings will be held every Wednesday from noon until 2 p.m. on the following dates:

  • February 4, 11, 18, 25
  • March 4, 18, 25
  • April 1, 8, 15, 22, 29
  • May 6

The Bowers Focus Group is a student support and learning organization. These are drop-in meetings, so you can show up at any time and leave at any time.

Typical meetings begin with introductions and individual updates, followed by discussions of issues, videos, presentations, and topics that are important to our community and members of the group. There is often focused discussion about numerous topics and opportunities (see list below).

The atmosphere is relaxed, very supportive, and open. It is intended to build relationships and to provide information, resources, and support to all students.

HFC sociology instructor Dr. Kalvin DaRonne Harvell is the faculty advisor. Chardin Claybourne and Dr. Courtney Matthews are the co-faculty advisors. The group provides an atmosphere in which students can be comfortable, while sometimes discussing uncomfortable topics.

The group exposes you to myriad opportunities within and outside HFC to help you grow academically and professionally, including:

  • seminars,
  • conferences,
  • presentation opportunities,
  • college and university campus visits,
  • cultural and historical tours,
  • scholarships,
  • national college connections,
  • internships,
  • employment opportunities,
  • referral opportunities,
  • leadership growth opportunities,
  • academic and basic needs support,
  • and more.

Many students and alumni report that the Focus Group experience transformed their lives as students and beyond. Alumni are active and are always welcome to continue participating in this community.

All HFC students are welcome and invited to attend meetings. For questions or more information about the Bowers Focus Group, contact any of the following:
