Get to Know HFC: Alecia Carter brings energy to her job in the testing center
HFC Enrollment Services Proctor Alecia Carter has been in the field of education for nearly 20 years.
“I was an elementary school paraprofessional for 10 years at three different schools in Detroit. I went into higher education for a change of pace,” she explained.
Carter has been in higher education for more than nine years. She has been at HFC since 2019. She started as a contractor through Prometric in Baltimore, MD. In 2023, Carter became a full-time employee at HFC. Previously, Carter contracted through Prometric for three years to Washtenaw Community College and the University of Michigan-Flint.
“My main duty is proctoring midterms and finals, mostly math exams, in the Welcome Center. I conduct testing for all HFC programs. I want to make sure all our students have a great experience at the College,” said Carter. “I also have been assisting with HFC activities, such as athletic events like this season’s Hawks volleyball home opener, and also going with the team to see the Detroit Tigers.”
"Alecia is a great employee and an even better person," said her supervisor, Jamie Henne. "I have never seen her be anything but positive. She has a passion for getting involved in the community and has brought many of those ideas to the College. One in particular was a student services outing to a Detroit Tigers game. She shared the idea with me and the steps to request tickets. I went forward with it and eventually was able to make it happen. She is an asset not only to the testing department, but the College as a whole. We are lucky to have her."
Enjoys seeing students succeed
The middle of three and the eldest daughter, Carter was born in Oklahoma City, OK. Her family moved to Detroit when she was 2. She lives in Detroit and has a son.
Carter graduated from East Catholic High School in Detroit. She earned her bachelor’s degree in marketing and management from Central State University in Wilberforce, OH, which is a historically Black, land-grant university. She also earned a certificate in medical billing from Dorsey College in Madison Heights.
“I came to HFC in 2019 when I was proctoring nursing exams for Prometric on the East Campus. I became a part-time proctor for the College on the main campus before becoming full-time in 2023. It was a good career move to work for HFC,” she said. “I really enjoy interacting with students and seeing them succeed. Some of them even come back to see me, letting me know how they’re doing. That makes this job so rewarding.”
“I have known Alicia for about a year, and she is very organized and is always early to work,” said Enrollment Associate Todd Hakim. “Our department would not be successful without her.”
She reflected on the experience for her as a professional.
“The people here are very nice, whether they’re coworkers or the top administrators,” she said. “The president and the vice presidents always make the time to talk to you, even if just to ask how you are, which demonstrates strong leadership. It makes working here a pleasure.”
