Equal Pay Day is the symbolic day dedicated to raising awareness of the gender pay gap. In the United States, this date symbolizes how far into the year the average working woman must work in order to have earned what the average working man had earned the entire previous year. The exact day differs year by year (this year, it was March 12).

This symbolic day was first observed in 1996 by the National Committee on Pay Equity, a coalition of women's and civil rights organizations, labor unions, professional associations, and individuals working to eliminate sex and race-based wage discrimination and to achieve pay equity.

Equal Pay Day goals

The goals of Equal Pay Day include:

  • Providing information about the reasons for pay inequality.
  • Informing on equal pay and to raise awareness on the problem of unequal pay.
  • Providing a platform to share knowledge about equal pay and the equal pay day campaigns.
  • Creating awareness of the problem.
  • Providing and creating multipliers and supporters with helpful information.
  • Identifying implementation strategies for closing the wage gap.
  • Closing the gender pay gap.
  • Identifying strategies for how to close the gender pay gap.
  • Pushing toward the closure of the gender pay gap.

This is one of four events MI-ACE Women’s Network at HFC is sponsoring for the rest of March in celebration of Women’s History Month. No registration is required to participate in the photo shoot. Please wear red to support Equal Pay Day.
