HFC’s Mirror News wins 15 awards at MPA Better Newspaper Contest

The Michigan Press Association has presented The Mirror News – HFC’s student-run newspaper – 15 awards at the MPA Better Newspaper Conference for the 2023-24 academic year.

The Mirror News staff won individual awards in the following categories:

  • Second Place in all divisions of the Best Photographer category to Katie Warden
  • First Place in the Division 3 – Column Review or Blog Sports category to Anthony Stone for “Will the Detroit Pistons Ever Get Beyond Rebuilding?”
  • Second Place in the Division 3 - Column Review or Blog Sports category to Anthony Stone for “Looking Back at the Lions’ Exciting Season and Prospects for Next Season”
  • Second Place in the Division 3 – Sports News/Features category to Anthony Stone for “Henry Ford College Men’s Basketball Championship Season”
  • Second Place in the Division 3 – Front Page Design category to Edgar Gutierrez for “School to Prison Pipeline”
  • Second Place in the Division 3 – Non-Front Page Design category to Zynab Al-Timimi for “Detroit Riverwalk Wins USA Today Best Riverwalk for Third Straight Year”
  • Second Place in the Division 3 – Special Advertising Section category to Alayna Kondraciuk for “Henry Ford II Honors Program Opens New Hub”
  • Second Place in the Division 3 – Feature Story category to Jay Elias for “The Transformative Power of the Schvitz”
  • Third Place in the Division 3 – Feature Story category to Ashley Davis for “You Betta Work! Campus Drag Show Displays How Self Expression Strengthens Identity and Yields Personal Growth”
  • Third Place in the Division 3 – Investigative Reporting category to Katie Warden for “The MacKenzie Fine Arts Center Elevator Breaks Down”
  • Third Place in the Division 3 – Feature Photo category to Katie Warden for “Crowd gathers around burning Viking ship at Michigan Nordic Festival”
  • Third Place in the Division 3 – Front Page Design category to Edgar Gutierrez for “Improvements to Henry Ford College Eshleman Library”
  • Third Place in the Division 3 – Original Cartoon-Editorial or Entertainment category to Samuel Marsh for “Hawkster overwhelmed with school and campus activities”
  • Honorable Mention in the Division 3 – Front Page Design category to Samuel Marsh for “Henry Ford College Men’s Basketball Championship Season”

"I am incredibly proud of the staff of The Mirror News," said Warden. “These awards acknowledge the hard work the staff, current and those who've graduated, have constantly put in.”

HFC English instructor Dr. Peter Kim has been The Mirror News faculty advisor since 2017.

“Each year the student staff of The Mirror News continue to impress,” said Kim. “I am so proud of their talents and am grateful to the MPA for recognizing the amazing HFC students I have the honor and privilege to work with.”
