The Writing Center is open this winter!

The HFC Writing Center in the Eshleman Library (Building B) is excited to announce that we are open for business during the Winter 2022 semester with both online and in-person services available to students, faculty, and staff!

The Writing Center offers support for any writer (students and employees), at any level, at any stage of the writing process. It provides support as you write and think through your goals and approaches. Respondents in the Writing Center work with you to provide you with a fuller understanding of the academic, social, and cultural effects of your writing.

“The Writing Center is an important resource for the HFC community. Whether you are writing a paper for class, applying for a scholarship, planning to transfer to a four-year university, or working on a creative project, the Writing Center can help by providing feedback, guidance, and instruction. All are welcome to visit us on campus in the Library on Mondays and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for a drop-in session, or at WCOnline where we have synchronous and asynchronous appointments available,” said HFC Director of the Writing Center Chelsea Lonsdale.

How it works

We encourage writers to meet with a faculty Respondent at any stage of your writing process, whether you are just getting started on an assignment or polishing a final draft. When making an appointment with the Writing Center, you should include your assignment instructions if you have them, any draft(s) you have completed, and your concerns or a brief explanation of what you would like help with.

The Writing Center will not fix mistakes or edit documents, but we will help you expand your writing ideas, identify areas of improvement, think about purpose, audience, and expectations, and provide strategies and resources that you can use to improve your skills and confidence.

The Writing Center has a frequently updated LibGuide with handouts, slides, and links to external resources that students and faculty can access. In addition, the Writing Center hosts monthly coffee hours for faculty and staff in partnership with the HFC Center for Teaching Excellence and Innovation (CTEI) and maintains a monthly newsletter with information about upcoming events, resources, and scholarships.
