T he Writing Center at HFC is a hub for exploring, developing, and enacting writing at Henry Ford College. It is a collaborative and relational space where writers, readers, and texts can coexist and get to know each other.
The Writing Center is for any writer, at any level, at any stage of the writing process. This can be academic, professional, social, creative, professional, or civic writing.
We provide support to you, the writer, as you think through your writing goals, approaches, and products. Respondents in the Writing Center will work with you to help you develop a fuller understanding of the academic, social, and cultural effects of writing.
What are sessions like?
During sessions, you — the writer — will discuss and receive feedback on your work. This can start at the idea stage and continue through final production, or it can be at any stage along the way. Sessions are designed to be supportive, empowering, and interactive. We do not edit papers, but we can help you develop strategies to meet your own goals through writing. You are the core participant in each session. We provide the guidance, you do the work.
What should I bring?
If you're seeking help with a specific assignment or class, bring your assignment instructions, your written draft (it's helpful if you have begun writing), and your laptop or tablet if you have one. Come prepared to talk about your goals and challenges with writing. You can also bring any previous drafts of your written work, including those that have received instructor feedback.
If you're seeking writing help for professional purposes -- such as a cover letter and resume, a letter to a legislator, a presentation, or a better way to construct email and professional written communications -- bring your goals and ideas, plus your laptop or tablet if you have one.
If you're seeking a broader conversation about creative writing or other types of writing, bring your ideas, any drafts, and your goals so we can have a focused discussion. A laptop or tablet is helpful.
When should I visit the Writing Center?
You can meet with us at any stage of any writing process, whether you need help understanding an assignment, developing a draft, incorporating sources, formatting details, developing a creative project, or addressing feedback from a peer or instructor.
If you are seeking help with an assignment, we recommend you meet with us well before your project is due so we can be of the most assistance to you, and so you'll have time to revise or re-focus your work as needed.
How often can I visit the Writing Center?
Many of the writers we work with come back for additional help on the assignments or projects throughout the semester! However, we do limit appointments to one per day and two per week.
Can I bring in creative writing, such as poetry or a short story?
Yes! Writing Center respondents can work with all types of writing. For more information, contact us!
Do you offer support to English Language learners?
The Writing Center welcomes writers of all levels and backgrounds, including those who are non-native speakers. Students in upper-level English Language classes as well as students who are enrolled in college-level coursework but who wish to receive support focused on the English language are welcome to use the Writing Center. Please refer to our current schedule for respondent availability.
I’m a faculty member. Can I visit the Writing Center?
Absolutely. Faculty and staff at HFC are more than welcome to visit the Writing Center for help with their writing. We also partner with faculty to provide course and assignment-specific resources.
Do you have handouts or materials I can take with me?
We do! The Writing Center has a frequently updated LibGuide with handouts, slides, and links to external resources.
