Volunteer for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

HFC and the University of Michigan-Dearborn will celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Day of Service event on Monday, Jan. 16, 2023.

The MLK Day of Service is a one-day outreach activity that commemorates the philosophy and legacy of the late civil rights leader/icon Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This event is a collaborative effort between HFC and UM-Dearborn. Students, faculty, and staff from both schools will volunteer their time to help local agencies through various projects.

OPTION 1: In-person volunteer options, remote locations:

  • Arts & Scraps in Detroit
  • Capuchin Services Center in Detroit
  • Eternal Light in Dearborn Heights
  • Forgotten Harvest in Oak Park
  • Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan in Detroit

OPTION 2: In-person volunteer options on the UM-Dearborn campus:

  • Arts & Scraps
  • Kids Against Hunger
  • Fleece blanket-making
  • Knitting hats and scarves

OPTION 3: Remote volunteer projects (at your home; you will need to provide the materials for these activities):

  • Fleece blanket-making
  • Creating greeting cards
  • Knitting hats and scarves

NOTE: Times for each project may vary and will be listed next to the project on the registration site. Virtual projects may be done at any time as long as they are completed by Jan. 16, 2023.

“HFC will be closed on January 16 to observe Dr. King’s birthday,” said HFC Student Activities Associate Mandy Earl. “Please join us as we celebrate 30 years of making a difference on MLK Day!”
