This year’s recipient of the Faculty Lecture Award is Pedro San Antonio, who teaches English at HFC. San Antonio will lead the discussion.

“Very often when we write about climate change, there’s a typical pattern: First, point out how we’ve ignored climate change for a long time, followed by the admissions that we’re screwed, but wrapping up everything neatly with hope – there’s still time to do something,” he explained. “So, what I point out is that the idea of hope is counter-productive in the fight against climate change because in the overwhelming presence of facts, hope becomes a less-than-rational response. The idea, as I suggest, is not to give up hope and not to continue to hope, but to eliminate the idea of hope altogether. That solutions toward climate change must be worked out in the absence of hope.”
