HFC’s student newspaper named No. 1 in Division 3

HFC's student newspaper, The Mirror News, was recently named the No. 1 newspaper in the state of Michigan for Division 3 by the Michigan Collegiate Press Association.

“This recognition is a testament to the teamwork and amazing talent and dedication of all the students, newspaper board members, instructors, administrators, and College staff who help make this student newspaper such a success,” said Dr. Peter Kim, The Mirror News faculty advisor.

The Mirror News won in the following categories:
• First place in the News Only Photo category for the photo, “Remembering Congressman John D. Dingell, Jr.” by Joshua Tufts.
• Third place in the Best Photographer category for “Ladling Out Lessons, One Dish at a Time,” “Home is Where the Skoolie is,” and “For Love, Not Profit” by Justin Randles.
• Third place in the Column: Review or Blog: News or Sports category for Jesse Mattox’s review of HFC’s production of The Laramie Project.
• Second place in the Editorial category for the editorial, “Family Separation and the Caravan: Trump’s History with Immigration,” by Elyas Perry.
• Second place in the Feature Story category for the feature article, “Welcome to the Ends of the World with Detroit’s Ambassadors of Psychedelia,” by Jessica D’Alfonso.
• Third place in the Investigative Reporting category for the article, “Shinola’s Detroit Image,” by Jessica D’Alfonso.
• Honorable mention in the Online Newspaper category for its online edition.
• First place in the Single Ad category for the “Campus Safety Blue Lights” advertisement by Gabrielle Sisler.
• Honorable mention in the Special Advertising Section category for the “Rise of Trend45, Bxnk in Detroit” advertisement by Joshua Tufts.
• First place in the Sports News/Feature category for “Fowling, it Rhymes with Bowling” by Justin Randles.
• Second place in the Sports News/Feature category for “Henry Ford College’s Men’s Basketball: Road to the Championship” by Joshua Tufts.
• First and second place in the Sports Photo category for the photos, “Men’s Basketball Tops Wayne County Community College” and “Rough Start for Lady Hawks,” by Joshua Tufts.

“It is more important than ever to recognize and encourage good, impactful journalism,” said Joanne Williams, an associate professor of journalism and mass communication at Olivet College and president of the MCPA. “That is what our college newspapers are doing and with the support and recognition from contests and professionals in the field, that will continue. Our experienced faculty and advisors will see to it as well.”
