The HFC wrestling team celebrates their victory on Jan. 25 as they became the MCCAA State Champions.

The HFC wrestling team had a phenomenal weekend. Not only did it win the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) State Championships on Jan. 25, wrestler Donte Rivera-Garcia was named MCCAA Wrestling Freshman of the Year and Coach Grant MacKenzie was named MCCAA Coach of the Year.

This is a strong finish to a superb season. During the 2019-20 season, HFC’s wrestling program achieved a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national ranking for the first time, where Rivera-Garcia, of Allen Park, became the first Hawk to be nationally ranked at No. 1. He was also the first Hawk to win at the Adrian Invitational at Adrian College and the second Hawk to win at the Ben McMullen Open at Muskegon Community College.

“Winning a conference championship will have an immediate impact on recruiting for next season,” said MacKenzie. “People are noticing our program here at HFC. And they should. I give all the credit to the young men who bought into the team’s vision and mission, and put in the hard work. HFC is the first and best choice for NCJAA wrestling in our region.”
