U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Dingell will be one of the panelists at the virtual Town Hall webinar called "A Path Forward in a World of Injustice" at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 11.

U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Dingell of Michigan’s 12th District will participate in the HFC President's Town Hall, “A Path Forward in a World of Injustice,” which will be held via Zoom on Thursday, June 11, at 11:00 a.m. She will join the panel at 11:30 a.m.

The President's Town Hall will open a dialogue for the HFC community to speak about the death of George Floyd, an African-American man who was killed when a Caucasian policeman jammed his knee into his neck for nearly 9 minutes on May 25. In the aftermath of Floyd’s death, protests have been held across more than 400 in the United States – including Detroit and Dearborn – to speak out against police officers using excessive force, lack of police accountability, and perceived racial inequality.

“It became clear to me that we need to create a space to begin conversations about how our campus community can create a diverse environment of respect and civility that honors the lived experiences of African Americans and other people of color, while addressing the disparities in how they are often treated in our society,” said HFC President Russell Kavalhuna.

Town Hall panelists

Kavalhuna will moderate the panel of guests who will participate in the Town Hall webinar. In addition to Dingell, the panelists include:
Warren Harrison: HFC student and President of the HFC Engineering Club
Munira Kassim: HFC Student Compliance and Conduct Supervisor/Student Title IX Coordinator
Jade Lewis: HFC student and Secretary of the HFC African American Association
Imad Nouri: HFC instructor and Licensed Professional Counselor
Keambra Pierson: HFC Surgical Technology program Director and incoming Associate Dean, School of Business, Entrepreneurship, and Professional Development (BEPD)
Mark Yancy: Success Navigator and Detroit Promise Coach

More panelists are currently being finalized. All panelists will be members of the HFC community who have experience in addressing these issues in their own lives, according to Kavalhuna.
