More details:

HFC will be the first college/university in Michigan to host “Community Baby Shower & Safe Sleep Education for Expecting Mothers” Saturday, April 27, from 10:00 a.m. to noon in the Community Room of the Welcome Center (Building WC) on the main campus. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m.

This educational workshop is sponsored by the HFC Community Leadership Program in conjunction with Bishop Reginald Bluestein of C.A.R.E. Ministries in Detroit. Its purpose is to educate new and expecting parents on the importance of safe sleep, infant health, breastfeeding, and other available resources.

The sponsors plan to give each mom who attends a Pack-N-Play and serve them brunch. Representatives from Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) in Dearborn, Maternal Infant Health Program (MIHP), and various other social services agencies and mental health agencies will have information tables at the workshop.

Michigan has a heavy focus on safe sleep. Moms who enroll with MIHP are required to attend an event such as this workshop to stay enrolled. Bluestein has taught more than 2,500 moms using this model and is thrilled to work with a community college, according to Robert Yahrmatter, HFC political science instructor, who organized this workshop.

“I’m proud of the fact that Henry Ford College is the first community college and the first higher education institution in the state of Michigan to be sponsoring this type of workshop,” said Yahrmatter. “I am grateful to the College for providing the venue for ‘Community Baby Shower & Safe Sleep Education for Expecting Mothers.’”
