Ice Carving Club Places 3rd in National Collegiate Championships

HFC's Ice Carving Club placed third at the National Ice Carving Association National Collegiate Championships at Zehnder’s Snow Fest in historic Frankenmuth the weekend of Jan. 28.

The HFC Ice Carving Club’s overall score at the Snow Fest was 453.3. They were just edged out by Macomb Community College (OCC), which took second place with an overall score of 453.7. Oakland Community College (OCC) placed first with an overall of 454.4.

In overall individual rankings, Mark Tampakes, president of the HFC Ice Carving Club, placed third with an overall score of 227.5. He also earned an honorable mention, placing third in the compulsory category; earned a silver medal, placing fifth in the singles category; and earned a bronze medal, placing second in the team category.

Steve McCormick, secretary of the HFC Ice Carving Club, placed fourth with an overall score of 225.8 in overall individual rankings. Additionally, he earned an honorable mention in the compulsory category; earned a silver medal, placing third in the singles category; and earned a bronze medal, placing second in the team category.

Club Member Robert Speeks also won a bronze medal in the singles category and an honorable mention in the team category. Jayme Slais, vice president of the HFC Ice Carving Club, won an honorable mention in both the singles and the team categories.

“Our students competed against other collegiate ice carvers from around the country. They performed very well and took third place overall. I’m very proud of their efforts and dedication,” said Jeffrey Lao, advisor of the HFC Ice Carving Club.
