Former HFCC coach to receive Legends Award

Sherm Collins
Sherm Collins

Sherm Collins, who coached many successful teams at HFCC during a 30-year career, will receive the Dearborn Sports Hall of Fame Legends Award March 24. The awards celebration begins at 4 p.m. at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center in Dearborn.

During his 30 years at HFCC, Collins coached the tennis, basketball and swim teams. Under his leadership, he led the tennis team to 15 league titles, eight regional crowns and national titles in 1965 and 1967. He led the basketball and swim teams, within a span of five years, to five league titles and a national championship – without a pool at HFCC, no less.

The Dearborn Sports Hall of Fame Legends Award is given to a Dearborn resident who has distinguished themselves beyond the level of recreation-sponsored activities, saluting the city’s rich history of excellence in athletics. Collins is proud to accept this honor on the behalf of the many students and teams he coached at HFCC and Bryant Junior High School (now Bryant Middle School) in Dearborn. Collins still coaches today as the assistant tennis coach at Romeo High School in Romeo, Mich. He has been a coach for more than 50 years.
