HFCC golfer earns honors

Derek Smith
Derek Smith is HFCC's All-America Golfer

Derek Smith, a member of the HFCC Men’s Golf Team, placed 11th out of 128 golfers at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Golf Tournament from May 22 to 25, earning All-Tournament Team and Second Team All-America honors.

During this four-day tournament, each golfer played 18 holes each day. Smith, a Woodhaven native and Riverview Community High School alumnus, shot 299 during tournament play with daily scores of 74, 77, 75 and 73. He is the only HFCC golfer to win All-America honors.

HFCC President Dr. Gail Mee recently presented Smith with the All-America certificate. Other honors Smith received include being named to the All Region XII Team and All-Eastern Conference First Team. He was also an individual medalist in the NJCAA Region XII Tournament.

“We are extremely proud of Derek's accomplishments at the national tournament. The course was extremely challenging and he remained poised and confident throughout play. Derek is a splendid example of the never-give-up spirit HFCC student-athletes display all year,” said Rochelle Taylor, HFCC Athletic Director.
