Athletics Dept. Honors 2011-12 Student Athletes

HFCC's Athletics Dept. honored its top student athletes Monday, May 21, at the Department’s end-of-the-year awards ceremony.

This week, HFCC golfer Derek Smith is competing in the 2012 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Men's National Golf Championship from May 22-25 at Swan Lake Resort's Black Course in Plymouth, Ind. Smith qualified for the tournament as an individual medalist in the NJCAA Region XII Tournament, held last week at the Bedford Valley Golf Club in Battle Creek, Mich. He is the only golfer at HFCC to advance to the national finals.

Other post-season appearances for HFCC athletes include the women's volleyball team, which lost in the first round of the district tournament, as well as the men’s basketball team, which also lost in the first round of the district tournament.

The following represent the post-season awards HFCC student-athletes earned during the season.

Women’s Volleyball:

  • Danielle Kopal – 3rd Team All-Conference; 
  • Alecia Abston – Honorable Mention All-Conference; and
  • Kara Cartrette – Honorable Mention All-Conference.

Men’s Basketball:

  • James Still – All-Region, All-Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA), 1st Team All-Conference, All-Defensive; 
  • Grant Stone – 2nd Team All-Conference; and
  • Kyle Baker – Honorable Mention All-Conference.

Softball:

  • Chelsea Laster – 1st Team All-Conference; and
  • Janell Ghnaim – Honorable Mention All-Conference.

Baseball:

  • Cody Greear – 1st Team All-MCCAA; 
  • Mathew Priebe – 2nd Team All-MCCAA; 
  • John VanHouten – Honorable Mention All-Conference; and
  • Daniel Muller – Honorable Mention All-Conference.

Men’s Golf:

  • The aforementioned Smith – All Region XII Team, All-Eastern Conference First Team.

HFCC's Athletics Dept. bestowed academic awards for Academic All-Conference to Smith, Alec Grant of the golf team and Amanda Warren of the softball team. Student Leah Mantei of the HFCC Women’s Basketball Team earned the Academic Award for Academic All-MCCAA, as well as the NJCCA Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence.

'I'm very proud of our athletes’ accomplishments. They are a fantastic group of student-athletes and it's exciting to share their successes both on and off the field. It's been a wonderful first year for me at the College but I'm looking forward to next year even more,' said HFCC Athletic Director Rochelle Taylor.
