HFCC basketball players earn All-American status!

Two HFCC Basketball players earned the prestigious All-American status from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NCJAA, http://www.njcaa.org/index.cfm) for 2011!

Sophomore Forward Terrence Tubbs of Ypsilanti, Mich., earned First Team honors for 2010-2011. He averaged more than 14 points and 8 rebounds a game.

'This honor feels great,'Tubbs said, adding that he and his team 'worked hard all season. The coaches were great and I am truly surprised about receiving this honor.'

Tubbs has received calls from a number of four-year colleges and he is currently reviewing each inquiry before making a final decision about where he will play for the upcoming season.

Sophomore Guard Jaime Stewart of Detroit, Mich., earned Second Team honors for the 2010-2011 season after earning Third Team honors in 2010. He averaged 17 points per game along with 8.1 rebounds per contest in 2011.

'This is a great honor for me, the team and the HFCC program,' Stewart said. 'But I couldn’t have achieved this without my teammates and coaches, who have worked very hard and done a great job,' he added.

Stewart accepted a scholarship to play at Montana State University this year and will head to the program in June to get a jump on his schooling and to workout with his new team. Montana State is part of the Division 1 Big Sky Conference.

Head Basketball Coach Abe Mashhour is pleased that Stewart's and Tubbs' hard work over the past two years has paid off.

'I believe that great things happen to great people and the two of these young men are terrific. Being named All-Americans is a testament to their unselfish nature and their willingness to sacrifice for the good of each other and the entire team,' he said.

Rochelle Taylor, director of HFCC Athletics, feels that these honors are a resounding tribute to the efforts of coaches and players to work as a team and play hard every night.

'Our basketball program has a long tradition of competing with excellence,' she said. 'We are tremendously proud that Terrance and Jamie have been recognized for their hard work and commitment to excel and are our newest All-America honorees.  It is no longer a secret that our talented coaching staff attracts and molds student-athletes that can compete on a national level,' she added.

The team finished the 2010-2011 season 19-10. For more information on HFCC Athletics, please visit http://athletics.hfcc.edu/.
