Academic Advising Staff

Meet your Academic Advisors and Success Navigators. A team of professionals committed to your success! Academic Advisors and Student Success Navigators are assigned to you based on your program of study and are available by appointment and on a limited walk-in basis. New degree-seeking students are required to meet with their advisor. From your first class through graduation, Academic Advisors and Success Navigators will help you map your academic plan.

Your Advisor will help you:

  • Develop skills and knowledge to make decisions about your education
  • Navigate the admissions process
  • Find information about programs offered at HFC
  • Make appropriate course selections
  • Evaluate assessment scores
  • Complete financial aid related paperwork

A Student Success Navigator will help you:

  • Connect and use campus resources
  • Make greater connections with the college and faculty
  • Form high quality peer relationships through clubs and student organizations
  • Stay on course and be your advocate and mentor
  • Resolve matters that impact your success
Michael Abney

Michael Abney

Academic Advisor

Michael Abney holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan State University. He is also a graduate of Central Michigan University with a Master’s degree in Administration. His professional background is as follows (starting with most recent): Chrysler Corporation - Design Engineer, Program Management (Jan. 1986 to Dec. 2009); Ford Motor Company - Design Engineer (1978 to 1985); and Proctor & Gamble - Production Operation Supervisor (1977 to 1978). He is an assistant baseball coach for the Henry Ford College Baseball Team, and is president of the Southfield Cardinals Baseball organization. He is married, with two sons: Justin, presently a Law student attending North Carolina Central Law School, and Aaron, presently a student at Howard University in Washington D.C.

Samer Atris

Samer Atris

Academic Advisor

Samer Atris is an Arab-American academic advisor at Henry Ford College. He has a bachelor's degree in psychology and master's degree in counseling. Samer worked as an intern in the counseling office during fall/2015 and winter/2015 semesters. He started working as an Academic Adviser in May/2016. Samer is a huge sports fan and loves his Detroit professional teams and Michigan Wolverines. Samer has sky dived, bungee jumped in South Padre, white water rafted in West Virginia, and zip lined through the Mayan Temple in Mexico.

Maya Calloway Richardson

Student Success Navigator for Health Careers

Maya Calloway Richardson is the Student Success Navigator for Health Careers. She has worked with students for nearly seven years in the areas of residence life, community development, and most recently Academic Advising. Maya earned her Master’s degree from University of Phoenix in business administration and completed a graduate certificate from Keller Graduate School in higher educational leadership. She strives to empower students while acting as a guide to campus resources and support tools to help students achieve their goals.

Sherry Clippert-Devogel

Sherry Clippert-Devogel

Academic Advisor

Sherry has an earned B.Sc. and Secondary Teaching Certification from Eastern Michigan University, a M.Ed. from Wayne State University, and Graduate Holistic Health Specialist Certification from Western Michigan University. This certification required a practicum which was completed at The Center for Mind Body Medicine in Washington, DC. Sherry has worked for U of D-Mercy as an Education and Training Counselor for UAW-Chrysler, Wayne State University as an undergraduate and graduate Academic Adviser II in the Interdisciplinary Studies Program. Sherry also taught UGE 100 at WSU, a course designed to empower students to achieve academic success and to develop lifelong learning skills for the informational age. Ms. Clippert has also worked for the University of Michigan as a Research Associate and Health Educator, School of Public Health, Detroit Middle School Asthma Project. Sherry has worked at HFC as an Academic Adviser since 2012.

Julie Fountain

Student Success Navigator for Nursing

Julie Fountain is the Student Success Navigator for Nursing. She has a Bachelor of Arts in English, History, and Secondary Education from Andrews University and a Master of Arts in Counseling from Western Michigan University. Since 2004 she has worked with nursing students, starting her career at Michigan State University College of Nursing and most recently working with students at the University Of Michigan School Of Nursing in Ann Arbor. Julie enjoys helping students find a career path that fits their interests and talents. She is married, has two young daughters, and loves traveling, baking, writing, and photography. Julie has been a Licensed Professional Counselor since 2008.

Michelle Holinski

Secretary

Michelle Holinski is the Secretary of Academic Advising. She provides secretarial support to the Advising & Student Success Manager and also the advisors/navigators. She has worked in various departments within HFC. She brings along commitment, knowledge, service to the students, and organizational skills. She also manages several work study students. She is dedicated to her job and makes sure the office runs smoothly.

Charles Patrick Jackson

Charles Jackson

Academic Advisor

Charles Patrick Jackson has a background of more than 18 years as an engineer for Ford Motor Company and Visteon, and holds both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. He is a freelance comic artist/cartoonist as well as Academic Adviser. Charles is the founding member and President of Detroit Tradecraft - a Facebook, an online and in real world, comic creators group. He is currently acquiring skills in Full Stack Web Development on Udemy.com and Udacity.com.

Stacy Jackson

Academic Advisor

Stacy Jackson is an accomplished professional with a breadth of experience in media arts, graphic design, communication, online learning, IT & education and training. She has taught Animation and Graphic Communication courses at community colleges, and uses a unique blend of compassion and creativity while working with students. Stacy holds a Bachelor’s of arts in Radio, TV and Film and a Master of Education in Instructional Technology focusing on interactive technologies from Wayne State University.

Academic Advisor

Melissa Johnson has been an Academic Advisor for Henry Ford College since 2012. She earned a bachelor's degree in Fashion Merchandising and Design as well as a master’s degree in Adult Education and Training. Melissa has worked in post-secondary education since 2008. Helping students find their college course path from the very beginning all the way to graduation is what she enjoys most about advising. She also teaches a College Success course at HFC, which allows her to interact academically with the students the Advising department services.

Beth Michel

Beth Michel

Academic Advisor for STEM and Liberal Arts

Having earned an Associate in Science degree here at Henry Ford College, Beth is especially excited to return to her alma mater to help empower students to reach their academic and career goals. She enjoys collaborating with students to explore options and opportunities in order to help them reach new possibilities. After completing her associate degree here at HFC, Beth transferred to the University of Michigan - Dearborn where she completed both a Bachelor of Arts in Health Policy Studies (with a Human Resource Management specialty) and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Beth went on to earn her Master of Arts in Guidance and Counseling from Eastern Michigan University and she is also a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). Beth’s previous work experiences include Davenport University where she taught Introduction to Sociology and Resource Development, a college success course designed for new students. Beth’s employment experience also includes work as a Corporate Academic Advisor/Career and Education Consultant for DTE Energy, Michigan Consolidated Gas Company (MichCon), and Ameritech. In her spare time, Beth enjoys travel, art, music, animals, and sampling different cuisines.

Christine Munerantz

Christine Munerantz

Academic Advisor

Chrissy Munerantz has worked at Henry Ford College since 2012. In 2012 Chrissy made a transition from career services to advising. After seeing some students unhappy with their program choice and working with students at the end of their program, she decided to work with students at the start of their journey. Chrissy is passionate about higher education and enjoys helping students connect with resources and services so they can be successful. Chrissy has a bachelor’s degree in Communication, master’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Human Resources Management, and a Career Development Facilitator Certificate.

Lorraine Paffenroth

Lorraine Paffenroth

Manager of Academic Advising and Student Success

Lorraine Paffenroth has been with HFC for 18 years, most of that time as the Student Success Navigator for Nursing. Lorraine holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Child and Family Services as well as a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Eastern Michigan University. She is dedicated to students and understands the importance of forming student/adviser relationships. Lorraine believes that those relationships build trust and commitment and assist in providing the right care and service to promote student success. Currently she serves as the Manager of Academic Advising and Student Success. She is also a trained Stephen Minister providing one on one compassionate care to people in crisis.

Akilah Paramore

Academic Advisor

Akilah Paramore has experience in communications, public relations, and instructional professional. She enjoys working with students from diverse backgrounds. With more than 10 years of communication experience, her background includes working at multiple public relations agencies, legal marketing for one of Detroit’s premier mid-sized law firms, and as an adjunct instructor teaching oral and written communication courses at several higher learning institutions, including Henry Ford College. Akilah also works as an independent contractor facilitating workshops to high school students and under-served populations on subjects related to career training. Subjects include resume creation, interview preparation, career assessments based on interests, and life skills to students with disabilities. Akilah holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Communication and a Master of Arts degree in Organizational Communication and Public Relations from Wayne State University.

Karen Rumschlag

Karen Rumschlag

Academic Advisor

Karen obtained a Bachelor’s in Business Administration, Master’s in Management, and equivalency of a Minor in Psychology. She has worked in higher education for several years in different roles. Karen is dedicated and enjoys assisting students as they develop holistically. She wants to make a positive difference in students’ lives by guiding students to follow a career path that is right for them. I am a mother of two daughters and one grandchild.

Jessica Rutherford has been an advisor at HFC since April of 2016. She has a Master’s degree in Counseling from Oakland University and a Bachelor’s degree in Family Studies from Central Michigan University. She enjoys helping students navigate through college to help them be successful in achieving their academic and personal goals. Jessica loves all things Harry Potter, has a rubber ducky collection, and enjoys watching The Office and Friends.

Tia Silva

Student Success Navigator for STEM

Tia Silva is the Student Success Navigator for STEM with an emphasis on Pre-Engineering and Engineering Technologies. For more than 12 years, she has been coaching and empowering students in multiple areas along the college continuum on how to reach their undergraduate academic dreams. Tia earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Olaf College in Spanish and Hispanic Studies and her Master of Arts degree from Madonna University in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. Her goal is to contribute towards the creation of stronger bridges between academic and social supports for students that carry them through to graduation.

Bridget Smith-Botos

Bridget Smith-Botos

Academic Advisor

For nearly ten years, Bridget has been working with college students to help them achieve their academic and professional goals. In addition to serving as an adjunct instructor, Bridget has also helped to develop a leadership development program for college students. Bridget holds a Master of Arts in Social Sciences from the University of Michigan-Flint and a Bachelor of Science in Sociology from Grand Valley State University and is currently working on her Master's degree in Sociology. Outside work Bridget enjoys writing, providing voiceovers for radio commercials, and serving her local community on the parks and recreation board.

Student Success Navigator for Business and Computer Technology

Erin Yanke is the Student Success Navigator for Business and Computer Technology. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Central Michigan University - Fire Up, Chips! She earned her master’s degree in Counseling at Oakland University. She completed her counseling internship at Henry Ford College, which solidified her passion for helping students on their academic journey. She also teaches College Success at HFC, which provides her the opportunity to interact with students in a different capacity. Erin is excited to exercise her passion and steer students toward accomplishing their goals.
