Support WHFR-FM! Annual Radiothon is April 12-18
HFC’s student-run radio station WHFR-FM (89.3 FM) will hold its annual pledge drive, Radiothon 2026, April 12-18 with a variety of special on-air events scheduled throughout the week, and a benefit concert on April 18.
Since 1999, HFC Media Communication Arts Chairperson and WHFR General Manager Susan McGraw has been the general manager of the College’s student-run, non-commercial, independent radio and internet broadcasting station. She is also an alumna of the College.
“On the heels of our 40th anniversary celebration last fall, WHFR-FM is still making waves,” said McGraw. “At WHFR, ‘Life begins at 40’ means knowing who we are, taking pride in what we’ve built, and looking ahead with confidence to try new things, invest in technology that will move us forward, and commit even more fully to serving our listeners and supporting the next generation of broadcasters with renewed creativity. Radiothon 2026 is our opportunity to build on that confidence.”
Providing original content since 1985
Founded on December 20, 1985, WHFR has been providing local talk and original, eclectic musical programming from talented, creative, local independent artists rarely heard on the Metro Detroit radio dial. Known for its classical programming in the overnight hours, original musical styles from talented musicians, and great local talk, WHFR airs what many other stations do not.
“Now is our time to explore together what WHFR is capable of – leveling up the station with new eclectic programming, industry-quality technology and equipment upgrades, and expanded opportunities for our students and volunteers. It’s about doing what we’ve always done – bigger, better, and bolder. And with some extra fun and celebrating added in!” said McGraw.
Continued community support needed
To keep the station operating, we rely on listener support. We hold this event only one week out of the year, and we call it Radiothon.
Please help us continue to provide this forum for learning and great radio by donating to WHFR-FM during our Radiothon 2026 pledge drive. This annual fundraiser is the main way that WHFR acquires funding to stay on the air, operate at the level that you expect and deserve, and offer a real-world forum for training. Because WHFR does not receive government funding, more than 60% of our budget comes from generous donors like you!
“This pledge drive is our primary source of funding to stay on the air,” said McGraw. “For more than four decades, your support and generosity have kept us going strong and allowed our passionate student and volunteer staff to hone their skills in radio and create programming they’re incredibly proud of. In order to keep up this momentum, we are asking for your help again. Every dollar makes a difference. Every donation helps ensure another year of bold, commercial-free programming and student opportunities.”
WHFR benefit concert
In addition to Radiothon 2026 programming, WHFR invites the community to celebrate by attending a WHFR benefit concert at 342 Bar & Grill, 3932 Pelham St. in Dearborn Heights, with the live, local music of Dave & Kristi and fun surprises at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 18. Suggested donation for admission is $5. You can also participate in the fun #LifeBeginsAt40WHFR sticker campaign. Details on both at www.whfr.fm.
