Geffen’s and Sayre’s photography featured in “Pathways to the Self” exhibition
HFC religious studies instructor Dr. Joel Geffen and retired HFC history instructor Pamela Sayre are two of four photographers whose work will be displayed in “Pathways to the Self” from Thursday, January 15, through Friday, February 27, at the EmmaJean Woodyard Gallery in the Henry Ford Centennial Library, 16301 Michigan Ave. in Dearborn.
The other photographers are Pollyanne McKillop and Tim Haber. An opening reception will be held January 15 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the Woodyard Gallery. The reception will include music, beverages, and halal food. Haber will give an “artist talk” about his photography. Geffen, who has mentored the “Pathways” photography group from its inception eight years ago, will make some remarks.
“All of us in this group are motivated by a single question: ‘Why do you photograph what you do?’” explained Geffen. “This seemingly simple question is difficult to answer when considered deeply, because there are profound reasons why any of us choose the paths that we do. ‘Pathways’ seeks to understand why we create art. We strive to understand ourselves better and to focus on the art that comes most naturally to us. This allows us to play to our strengths, and we are more able to create visually and emotionally compelling images.”
He continued: “Each artist featured in this exhibition has worked hard to develop a photographic project of professional quality. They have devoted themselves to exploring a subject of great personal meaning. We believe that photography, ultimately, is self-portraiture.”
The “Pathways” exhibition is part of a Dearborn initiative to present fine art photography.
The January 15 reception and “Pathways” exhibition are free and open to the public. Library hours:
