Join us for Native Plant Day
HFC will celebrate its first Native Plant Day on Monday, April 13, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the main campus.
Meet in the campus quad area between the Reuther Liberal Arts Building (Building K), the Health Science Education Center (Building G), and the MacKenzie Fine Arts Center (Building F). From there, president of the Student Environmental Association Reem Alhadad will take you on a walking tour of HFC’s main campus and the University of Michigan-Dearborn’s Environmental Interpretive Center.
"April is National Native Plant Month and Earth Day is Wednesday, April 22," said Alhadad. "We live in a flood zone and near factories and rivers, so viewing gardens and natural areas as an afterthought can exacerbate the issues that can come with living in urban and suburban areas. The purpose of Native Plant Day is to learn more about native plants and their importance to our community and our planet."
Creating a greater sense of connection with UM-Dearborn
Alhadad and the participants will hike mostly through the trails on the two campuses. Along the way, Alhadad will identify various plants and explain their purpose.
"I’m trying to set a precedent for people to take advantage of can be done on the HFC campus," said Alhadad. “I want to create a greater sense of connection between the College and UM-Dearborn. We’re already in partnership with them, and there’s so much we can offer each other.”
Native Plant Day is free and open to the public. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes and be sure to stay hydrated. For questions or more information, contact Alhadad at ralhadad@hawkmail.hfcc.edu.
