Michigan Reconnect enabled JoJo Doss to pursue her dreams at HFC
Thanks to Michigan Reconnect, HFC student Jonneshia “JoJo” Doss is able to pursue her long-delayed dream of achieving a college education.
“I never thought I would be a college student,” said Doss. “I thought it wasn't affordable or something doable. Michigan Reconnect changed all that.”
Michigan Reconnect is a scholarship program that pays for you to attend a Michigan community college tuition-free if it is in your district, and offers a large tuition discount for out-of-district enrollment.
“I’ve learned so much at HFC,” said Doss. “I chose HFC because of all the amazing things I heard and read about it. They offer amazing clubs, the support services are plentiful, and there's never a shortage of things to do and be a part of! HFC continues to change my life.”
Aspires to career in public health
The youngest of four, Doss was born in Columbus, OH. She has 10 children ranging from 9 to 33 years old. She lives in Romulus with her husband, Deonte Lewis.
Although Doss attended Osborn High School in Detroit, she completed her GED at Flint Genesee Job Corps. She is pursuing her associate degree in science with a focus in public health at HFC and will graduate in 2027. Afterward, she plans to transfer to Wayne State University to work toward a bachelor's degree.
Doss has a certification in Adverse Childhood Experiences and Trauma Informed Care. She is also a certified Community Health Worker and Mental Health First Aid Provider. She earned all of these credentials from Wayne State.
“My career goal is to finish my education and serve my community,” she said. “I want to help correct the many issues I have seen in the public health field. I want to create policies that are inclusive for everyone, not dictated by political parties.”
“HFC is a place that supports your whole experience”
At HFC, Doss is active in the Evergreen Theatrical Society and the Dr. Henry J. Bowers Focus Group. She has also taken advantage of Career Services assistance in charting her path.
“I am learning so much history in the Bowers Focus Group and feel so supported,” she said. “Career Services has an amazing staff to help you plan and apply for your continued education and career.”
Bowers Focus Group faculty advisor Dr. Kalvin DaRonne Harvell said Doss personifies Umoja, one of the seven Nguzo Saba principles of Kwanzaa, which means unity.
"Jonneshia is a wonderful addition to the Focus Group," he said. "She has found her voice and uses it to champion the causes she holds dear. Jonneshia is emerging as a leader. She continues to navigate the college culture with intelligence, dignity, and compassion for others."
Whether you are a traditional student or returning to college at a later age, Doss recommends HFC in the strongest terms.
“I really like the diverse culture of staff and students you get to attend classes with, enjoy campus events with, and people to join you in your journey,” she said. “HFC is a place that supports your whole experience. They address any basic needs issues you may have, any learning barriers or technology concerns, support your mental health, offer financial assistance beyond tuition, and the campus is always doing something to engage students and staff. It’s very inclusive and welcoming.”
