HFC and the Village Herb Associates of Dearborn named HFC student Iman Soubra as the Outstanding Biology Student, awarding her a certificate of achievement and $500.

Soubra and fellow HFC student Abir Sayed are the two recipients of this award for 2026. HFC biology instructor Dr. Lathika Moragoda and HFC Director of Health, Education, and Human Services Dr. Cristina Bailey nominated Soubra.

“I was studying for my microbiology quiz in the Learning Lab when I saw the email and showed it to my friend. I was over the moon! I was so excited that I couldn’t study for the next 30 minutes,” recalled Soubra. “I’m very honored to have received this award. I didn’t even know there was such an award! I also feel seen, that my hard work is finally paying off. My professors motivated me to continue to achieve good grades and set higher standards for myself in their classes. If I was getting a B, they pushed me toward getting an A. They knew I had the drive to achieve that. Whoever else gets this award in future, I hope that they treat it as something that continues to inspire them.”

Aspires to work as a surgical tech and medical malpractice lawyer

Born in Maryland, Soubra moved to Michigan when she was 4. The eldest of four, she lives in Dearborn. Her brother, Zach, just completed his first year at HFC, while their mother, Aula Monia, graduated from HFC on May 9.

“I’m very involved with my family; we’re a tight-knit family,” said Soubra. “I don’t have to worry about being disconnected from them because members of my family also attend HFC. We’ve met up on campus regularly during the school year.”

Soubra, who speaks fluent Arabic, graduated from Dearborn High School. At HFC, Soubra is studying biology and plans to enroll in the College’s Surgical Technologist Program this fall.

Afterward, Soubra hopes to transfer to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where she will finish her bachelor’s degree in biology. Her goal is to become a surgical technologist and later attend law school. She would like to apply her knowledge in the medical field as a medical malpractice attorney.

Two degrees and a certificate -- while maintaining a life balance

By the time she graduates in 2028, Soubra will have completed an associate degree in biology, an associate degree in applied science – surgical technology, and a certificate in surgical technology.

She is also involved in Student Council at the College, serving as its communications liaison to improve communication between the student body and the administration.

“Compared to other colleges and universities, HFC works around students’ schedules. You can attend classes at HFC without sacrificing something in your life that you would have to at other schools. In terms of education and financial assistance, HFC is very accommodating toward its students,” she said. “HFC has given me insight into what it truly means to work toward a goal and the effort it takes to achieve it. It’s a very satisfying experience when you finally get the outcome you’ve earned for yourself.”

Bailey recognized Soubra’s academic success.

“Iman Soubra is an exceptional student who consistently demonstrates intelligence, reliability, and thorough preparation,” said Bailey. “Throughout Anatomy and Physiology, she distinguished herself by her knowledge of the material and by her ability to collaborate effectively with her peers and engage deeply with the lessons. Beyond her academic success, Iman possesses natural curiosity and kindness that enriches the learning environment. I have no doubt she will be an asset to the healthcare profession and a dedicated advocate for her future patients.”
