Be sure to mark your calendars: As HFC’s volunteer and student-run radio station WHFR-FM (89.3) turns 40 this year. The station will host its 16th Annual WHFR Record Show on Saturday, September 20, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the atrium of the John McDonald Student and Culinary Arts Center (Building M on the main campus).

“WHFR-FM is Metro Detroit’s premier volunteer and student-run college and community radio station,” said WHFR General Manager Susan McGraw. “What makes this year’s Record Show even more special is that it’s occurring during WHFR’s 40th anniversary.”

The WHFR Record Show has become one of the most eagerly anticipated shows of its kind in the Midwest, attracting vendors from the tri-state area and Canada. This show will feature thousands of rare and mainstream records, CDs, DVDs, videos, cassettes, books, posters, clothing, artwork, and other forms of music and movie memorabilia for sale by independent, local, and out-of-state vendors. There will also be door prizes, giveaways, and more.

"The WHFR Record Show only happens once a year, so don’t miss it!" said WHFR Multimedia Manager and Record Show Coordinator Michael Dereniewski.

There will be hourly “Record Show Cash” giveaways (vouchers that can be used with any vendor at the show) at the following times:

  • 10:00 a.m.
  • 11:00 a.m.
  • Noon
  • 2:00 p.m.
  • 3:00 p.m.
  • 3:30 p.m. for the grand prize $25 raffle

“This 2025 record show will be filled with variety – from rare musical finds to eclectic media memorabilia,” said McGraw. “Many of our favorite vendors will return, and there will also be new ones. We invite you to come out and enjoy a day of shopping for others, yourself, or both!”

60% of WHFR’s operating budget comes from donations

As a non-commercial, volunteer-staffed station, WHFR-FM is not licensed to sell commercials and must rely heavily on support from HFC and individual donations to operate. More than 60% of its operating budget comes from donor support.

“The Record Show is one of the biggest ways WHFR receives funds to operate,” said McGraw. “As we celebrate the start of our 40th year as a radio station, we're super excited to keep up this Record Show tradition here in 2025. We need and value our community’s help to keep WHFR going strong for you.”

Since it began as a student radio club with a closet-sized room for public address operations in 1985, WHFR-FM has developed into an award-winning, live 24/7 broadcast and internet outlet. On-air formats include blues, world, classical, avant jazz, indie rock, alternative/modern rock, techno, urban, big band, rockabilly, Americana, local news and views, classic radio drama, and much more. All music shows highlight new releases, independent labels, and local artists.
