HFC welcomes Cheryl Ebben, who’s at her best in an academic setting

HFC Purchasing Coordinator Cheryl Ebben is happy to be working in an academic setting.

“I missed being in a school environment,” said Ebben. “When I saw this opportunity at the College and I applied, I wanted to have a sense of purpose after being in the private sector. I love being on a college campus. People in academic settings tend to be laid back. Everyone’s here working toward a common purpose: to help students get a good education in a safe environment.”

Ebben’s duties include managing the flow of materials and goods within the College and across our supply chain, ensuring efficient movement, storage, and delivery.

“In other words, purchasing everything everyone needs on campus,” she said.

Ebben reports to Purchasing Director Dan Murray. She filled the vacancy Murray left when he succeeded Fred Steiner, who retired from the College in early 2024.

“We are excited to welcome Cheryl to the HFC family,” said Murray. “Her excellent work experience and positive attitude will be a huge asset to the purchasing department and the College.”

Mother, volleyball coach, logistics professional

Born in Detroit, Ebben is the third of four children. She lives in Livonia and has three adult children.

Ebben is an alumna of Stevenson High School in Livonia. She earned her bachelor’s degree in materials and logistics management from Michigan State University, and later completed graduate coursework in international business at Wayne State University.

“When researching careers, I thought materials and logistics management fit my personality. Back then, MSU was one of seven universities that offered that degree. It was very marketable,” recalled Ebben.

Prior to joining HFC in mid-May, Ebben worked in purchasing at Energy Products in Madison Heights for three years.

Ebben also coached volleyball for 25 years across the Metro Detroit area. She retired from coaching after the 2024-25 season where she assisted the varsity volleyball team at Divine Child High School in Dearborn. Her coaching experience led her to become the athletic director at St. Michael Catholic School in Livonia for 11 years. She also served as executive assistant to the athletic director for three years at Stevenson.

“I really enjoyed my time coaching. I feel I’m at my best in a school setting,” explained Ebben. “That’s why I like being at HFC. I like the variety. It’s not the same old thing on a daily basis. Things always go in different directions. Every day is something new, which is nice. I feel very fortunate that the College hired me to come work here. It’s a great feeling to come into work every day and feel good about it.”
