Get to Know HFC: Stephanie Scicluna thrives in the complexity of events and facilities
If HFC facilities manager Stephanie Scicluna (“sik-LU-na”) can make sure Bret Michaels of the musical group Poison could get on stage and sing with a sore throat—as well as myriad other management details—she is more than ready for the challenges of handling the rapid-fire day-to-day activities of Facilities Services at HFC.
“Bring it on!” said Scicluna, with a laugh. “I can handle this!” Her buoyant, can-do attitude and personality lend confidence to that statement.
Rock stars and radio days
The eldest of two, Scicluna was born in Ann Arbor and raised in Stockbridge. She has lived in Florida and San Diego before moving back to Michigan. She lives in Metro Detroit with her husband Eric, who’s an HFC alumnus and a firefighter.
After graduating from Stockbridge Junior/High School, Scicluna attended what is now the College of the Florida Keys in Key West. She transferred to Washtenaw Community College and earned her associate degree in radio broadcasting. She later earned her bachelor’s degree in art history from the University of Maryland. She is considering starting an MBA soon.
During her time at WCC, Scicluna interned for popular Detroit radio station WRIF-FM (101.1) – including the “Drew and Mike” show – and its sister station WCSX-FM (94.7).
“I attended every concert that came through the area on tour,” she said. “I organized and managed events. I managed the talent. I made myself known in the radio community and the music community. I toured the country and have been all over the place. I got to meet so many rock stars, including Bret Michaels and ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic. It was fun.”
Loving the constant change
After leaving the radio industry, Scicluna joined the facilities industry in 2014. She worked for Maintex, a commercial cleaning services and facility maintenance company in San Diego, for 10 years. She worked in the healthcare sector, managing 42 hospitals nationwide with custodial requirements and tracking healthcare data with cleaning processes/techniques. She then returned to Michigan and joined HFC Facilities Services in early 2024 as an administrative assistant.
“I love it here at HFC," said Scicluna. “I love being in a college environment. Everything changes, but everything stays the same.”
From March to June 2025, Scicluna served as interim administrative assistant for now-retired HFC Vice President for Finance John Satkowski. She was promoted to her current position on July 1. Her supervisor is Director of Facilities Reuben Brukley.
“I got a call from John on a Friday, asking me to fill in for several months. At the same time, Reuben texted me about this opportunity. My stomach did flips. I wasn’t expecting him to ask me to take on this position, but I’m glad I did. I learned a lot and have applied it to my role,” recalled Scicluna.
“Stephanie adds immediate organization and follow-through to our management structure,” said Brukley. “Having her on the facilities management team improves our preparedness and execution of event services, and overall quality control.”
Raw and Real
In her position, Scicluna handles “anything and everything” that comes her way, including:
- Scheduling events and managing the calendar for departments, student organizations, contractors, vendors, and other external parties
- Planning and hosting events that are beneficial to both the College and the community
- Making sure team members in Facilities Services have the most up-to-date schedules
- “Putting out fires”
“Facilities isn’t just about keeping the campus clean. Team members collaborate with various departments to set up rooms for events,” she explained. “Sometimes dates of events come into conflict, so we have to wrangle things as best we can for everything to be successful. We’re always pivoting and juggling multiple tasks.”
Scicluna is heavily involved in planning for the Southeast Michigan Student Success Center (SEMSCC) project.
“We have to move the IT infrastructure around before we can do anything else,” she said.
HFC Project Manager, Capital Projects Tanusree Coomar has worked with Scicluna for more than a year.
“Stephanie is very good at organizing tasks, which is very important in a busy department,” said Coomar.
“We keep it raw and real here in facilities,” said Scicluna, laughing. “I have a bird’s eye view of everything going on at the College. We know what’s happening here. That keeps things unique, fun, and exciting!”
