The HFC Center for Teaching Excellence and Innovation (CTEI) will host its fall mini-conference, “The AI Advantage: Enhancing the Hawk Learning Experience,” on Friday, September 5, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Rosenau Rooms on the first floor of the Andrew A. Mazzara Adminsitrative Services & Conference Center (ASCC) (Building L on the main campus).

HFC CTEI co-directors Scott Still and Rosemary Miketa organized “The AI Advantage.” This program will open with a panel discussion about the ever-evolving trends and strategies in AI related to its integration in higher education. The panelists include:

  • Dr. Anthony Perry, HFC Political Science Instructor
  • Kevin Trovini, HFC English Instructor
  • Dr. David Maier, HFC CIS Instructor
  • Sentinel Technologies Director of AI Innovation and Consulting Richard Sonnen

Participants will later collaborate in an interactive session. Individuals within each School and discipline at the College will experiment with AI technology and explore potential appropriate and effective pedagogical applications for their respective areas.

Integrating AI into the curricula

“Rosemary and I are thrilled to present this program, which will feature several brilliant panelists offering some very thoughtful consideration of AI in higher education – both how to combat its misuses and how to successfully and effectively integrate it into our higher ed curricula,” said Still. “We are equally excited, however, about the second half of the program, which will include a genuine hands-on workshop, through which participants will be given the opportunity to incorporate AI support into course materials of their own in a guided setting.”

Still encourages faculty members to attend “The AI Advantage” because AI is here to stay, and its uses are growing and changing rapidly.

“For anyone who might avoid participating in this program because they presume that we are strong advocates of student use of AI, we want them to know that — just like everyone else — Rosemary and I are struggling too,” he explained. “We do not have all the answers, nor do we necessarily see the recent proliferation of AI as entirely helpful. But we do recognize the fact that students are acutely aware of it and are using it extensively. We as faculty need to educate ourselves, which all begins with dialogues like this one.”

Bring your laptop, tablet, or electronic device

“The AI Advantage” is free and open to all HFC faculty and interested staff members. Please register at the link above. Lunch will be served. Please bring your laptop, tablet, or similar electronic device to participate in the interactive portion of the program.
