Join us for “Looking Beyond Libyan Jewelry” presentation and workshop
The HFC Council of World Cultures (CWC) is proud to announce its first program of the Fall 2024 semester, Looking Beyond Libyan Jewelry, on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. in the Rosenau Rooms on the first floor of the Andrew A. Mazzara Administrative Services & Conference Center (ASCC) (Building L on the main campus).
HFC sociology instructor Dr. Rajia Rashed will introduce the study of jewelry as a tool for narrating the history and culture of societies from historical and social-ecological perspectives. The jewelry of Libya is more than just adornment; it represents cultural values, religious beliefs, and personal expression.
You can learn about and make your own Libyan jewelry
Rashed will display many pieces of jewelry with diverse meanings and symbolism. You will learn about many essential elements of protection, and gain insight into the hopes and fears represented in these pieces, shedding light on the women who wore them. You will also be invited to make your own jewelry as a keepsake.
"Imagine a world where each piece of jewelry is a living testament, not only to its beauty but also to the intricate tapestry of human experiences. These stories are woven with threads of ritual, belief, and symbolism, offering a glimpse into the rich historical, political, economic, and cultural contexts that shaped their creation. Through these objects, we witness the continuing power of material possessions to shape our identities and interactions,” said Rashed.
This event is free. For questions or more information, contact Cassandra Fluker at crfluker@hfcc.edu.
