Muslim Student Association hosts “Faith and Fasting” Ramadan Dinner

The HFC Muslim Student Association will host its 13th annual Ramadan dinner called “Faith and Fasting” on Thursday, April 13, from 5:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the Forfa Auditorium in the Administrative Services & Conference Center(Bldg. L) on the main campus.

Keynote speaker

Shaykh Mohammed Ishtiaq will be the keynote speaker at this dinner. Ishtiaq is the principal at the Muneer Academy and an instructor at the Miftaah Institute in Warren.

He moved from England to Metro Detroit in 2010. From 2011-13, he taught at the IAGD Hifz Program in Rochester Hills. From 2013-16, he served as the Director of Quran and Islamic Studies at Huda School in Franklin. He later became the chaplain at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor from 2016-18. Known for his humor and groundedness, Ishtiaq is a two-time alumnus of Oakland University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in biology and his master’s degree in educational leadership.

Guest speaker

Dr. Mohannad Hakeem will be the guest speaker at this dinner. Hakeem is an engineer, educator, activist, and author who has studied traditionally under Muslim scholars for the past 20 years. A native of Lebanon, he lives in Dearborn, where he has helped establish community initiatives and organizations that focus on youth empowerment and education. He also wrote the book, Hadith on Community Service & Activism, which encourages young Arabs to pursue activism and civic engagement.

Hakeem is a two-time alumnus of the American University of Beirut, where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering. He later earned his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Wayne State University. He has taught students, conducted research, and authored more than 80 patents and technical papers.

Entertainment

Khadega Mohammed will provide the entertainment at this dinner, performing spoken word poetry. A Sudanese immigrant, she lives in Canton. She interned for Governor Gretchen Whitmer. She is a counselor for the Michigan Muslim Youth Council. An alumna of Wayne State University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in political science, Mohammed appeared in the documentary An Act of Worship, which chronicled Muslim life in the United States for the past 30 years.
