“The Season in the Mist: A Story of Sikhs in America” documentary airs April 7
The HFC Council of World Cultures presents The Season in the Mist: A Story of Sikhs in America, a documentary that will be screened Thursday, April 7, at 11:00 a.m. via Zoom.
Made in Michigan, this documentary interviews members of the Sikh minority among Indian immigrants, a people who often find themselves mistaken for members of a different religious minority. The film also addresses the contributions Sikhs have made to American society and the growing ethnic, racial, national origin, and religious diversity in America.
Dr. Arifa Javed, a filmmaker and sociology professor at the University of Michigan-Dearborn with extensive cross-cultural experience of her own, produced and directed this documentary. A native of India, the focus of Javed’s research interests has been culture, ethnicity, religion, and family. Issues like ethnic identity and ethnocentrism and their impact on family dynamics have always fascinated her. Her own cross-cultural experiences – first within India and then as an immigrant in America – drove her to seek a deeper understanding of such issues from a rational and neutral perspective.
