Ophthalmic Tech students volunteer at American Legion

A group of HFC Ophthalmic students posed with Dr. Kathy Campbell.
Dr. Kathy Campbell (center) gathers with HFC Ophthalmic Technician students and a veteran. Recently, Campbell and her students volunteered their time and expertise at the American Legion Post 108.

In late September, students in the HFC Ophthalmic Technician program attended a service-learning event at the American Legion Post 108 under the direction of Dr. Anne M. Nachazel, an ophthalmologist based in St. Clair Shores.

HFC worked with veterans and their families, taking their medical histories and testing:

  • Visual acuities
  • Eye pressures
  • Blood pressure
  • Dilation

Volunteer ophthalmologists from the Michigan Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons (MiSEPS) then completed a screening eye examination for each patient. It was a great success and approximately 45 patients were seen.

The HFC Ophthalmic Technician program volunteers in service-learning events every year to help the community in need. These service-learning events help students practice their clinical skills under the supervision of ophthalmologists, as well as Ophthalmic Technician Program Director Dr. Kathy Campbell and Clinical Coordinator/Instructor Yasmeen Nasser.

The students have also volunteered services at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, Focus: HOPE, and St. Christine's Soup Kitchen, all of which are based in Detroit.
