Now that HFC’s Learning Lab has returned to in-person operations, it is looking forward to employing HFC students as Peer Tutors once again for the Fall 2022 Semester. Volunteer and paid positions are available.

“During the pandemic, our office pivoted to offering tutoring services 100% online,” said Chardin Claybourne, HFC Faculty Director, Learning Lab and Tutoring Services. “We’re excited to have Peer Tutors working in-person in the Learning Lab for this fall.”

Peer Tutors are paid hourly ($9.87). Learning Lab staff will work around students’ course schedules to determine availability.

“We support student success and recognize that students have multiple responsibilities, so we are flexible when creating students’ work schedules,” said Claybourne.

The Learning Lab is currently in the pre-application phase. Interested students should complete the HFC Learning Lab: Peer Tutor Interest Form, which should take under five minutes. This form will help determine potential candidates' qualifications. Students should complete all sections of this form in order to understand your eligibility.

“The information students provide will allow us to follow up later in the hiring process,” said Claybourne.

Requirements

Initial Peer Tutor qualifications include the following:

  • Students must have completed one semester at HFC.
  • Students must have a minimum B+ grade average in the subject they are applying to support.
  • Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2.
  • Students must enroll in at least six (6) credits hours for the Fall 2022 semester.
  • Students must provide two (2) letters of recommendation from HFC instructors.
  • Students must be at least 18 years old.

“Tutoring is not only beneficial for students on the receiving side of the relationship,” explained Claybourne. “Numerous studies have found that students serving as peer tutors reported improved subject matter competency, stronger communication skills, greater leadership skills, significant development of value systems, and improvement at navigating social dynamics. As the Learning Lab is historically the department employing the largest number of students on campus, we are excited to bring back this very necessary co-curricular academic support, especially as we work to support the priorities and goals of the HFC’s Strategic Plan.”
