Recently, the Henry Ford Early College and the Universal Learning made large donations to the Hawks' Nest. The two schools donated approximately 2,552 lbs. of food, approximately 150 personal care items, and $840 in monetary donations.

In the first months of 2022, the Hawks’ Nest – HFC’s food pantry for students experiencing food insecurity – received two large donations, totaling approximately 2,550 lbs. of food, 150 personal care items, and $840 in monetary donations.

The Henry Ford Early College – a partnership between HFC, the Dearborn Public Schools, and Henry Ford Health System in coordination with Wayne RESA and the State Board of Education – and the Universal Learning Academy in Westland have given generously to the Hawks’ Nest.

HFEC

The HFEC National Honor Society took charge by getting donation boxes into each classroom, creating flyers, and announcing the competition to the different classes within the HFEC. They also collected, counted, and checked for expired goods before transporting everything to the Hawks’ Nest. The class that collected the most donations won a breakfast that was provided by the NHS.

The NHS raised 1,438 lbs. of food and 149 personal care items. In 2019, they donated approximately 692 lbs. of food. In 2018, they donated approximately 242 lbs. of food.

Universal Learning Academy

Universal Learning Academy's NHS and Character LEADS student organization hosted a food drive challenge in an effort to spread awareness of hunger and homelessness. All grade levels (P-12) competed to collect the most canned and nonperishable food items to be donated to families in need. Along with food items, monetary donations were also collected. After a week-long competition, its students and staff were able to collect 1,115 lbs. of food and $840 in monetary donations. In December 2019, Universal donated 733 lbs. of food to the Hawks’ Nest.

“This is one of the largest donations the Hawks’ Nest has received since it opened in January 2016,” said HFC Student Activities Associate Mandy Earl. “I’m very grateful to the HFEC and Universal for their efforts in assisting our students.”
