The HFC Center for Teaching Excellence and Innovation (CTEI) will sponsor a book reading with Dr. Steven L. Berg on Tuesday, April 26, at 3:00 p.m. via Zoom.

A professor of English and history at Schoolcraft College in Livonia and the president of the Michigan Chapter of the National Organization for Student Success, Berg will read from his book, Promoting Student Transformation at the Community College: If Everything Happens That Can't Be Done. This book is a narrative guide to teaching, featuring practical pedagogical advice for engaging students and addressing a variety of student needs.

“Each chapter consists of five essays around a theme before ending with a list of practical tips and tricks that we can implement in our lives as professors,” said Berg.

Not a book about theory

The book focuses on how faculty can persist in their individual classrooms as they work to transform students’ lives and their own. Although theory is discussed, this is not a book about theory. It is a book that provides specific examples that community college professors – and their university colleagues – can move “transformative experience” from a clichéd buzzword to a practical reality. The essays are both short and accessible, designed to provoke thinking, reflection, and discussion for faculty and students.
