A group of 10 HFC team members show their support on “Wear Red for Equal Pay Day" in 2019. This year's “Wear Red for Equal Pay Day” is Wednesday, March 24.

The Michigan American Council on Education (MI-ACE) Women’s Network in partnership with the ACE Women’s Network at HFC is sponsoring “Wear Red for Equal Pay Day” as part of a national initiative on Wednesday, March 24.

Equal Pay Day symbolizes how far into the year a woman must work on average to earn as much as her male counterparts did during the previous year. Red is worn on this day to symbolize how far women are “in the red” in regards to pay.

Over the course of a career, a woman could make up to $1 million less than men in income. The deficit affects women in major ways, including:

  • Paying for groceries
  • Renting or purchasing a home
  • Purchasing a vehicle
  • Investing in education
  • Investing in savings
  • Investing in retirement

The deficits are particularly pronounced for women who are single or heads of households. Learn more about Equal Pay Day.

"It is an honor and a privilege to serve as an institutional representative for the MI-ACE Women’s Network with my colleague, Shai James-Boyd,” said Dr. Susan Shunkwiler, dean of the HFC School of Health and Human Services (HHS). “HFC serves as a shining example of an institution that promotes women for their leadership and hard work. I am proud to work with so many amazing women."
