Zenni Optical recognizes HFC as one of the best eye care schools nationally

Ophthalmic technician in the HFC lab learning to conduct an eye exam

National corporation Zenni Optical, one of the largest online optical retailers, recently named the HFC Certified Ophthalmic Technician program -- the only accredited COT program in the state of Michigan -- as one of the Top 20 Schools in the nation for students to pursue a career in eye care.

HFC COT program prepares student for IJCAHPO national exam

The two-year associate degree program began at HFC in 2009 and is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Ophthalmic Medical Programs (CoA-OMP). The program admits approximately 20 students per academic year. Upon completion of the program, students are prepared to take the national certifying exam sponsored by the International Joint Commission of Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (IJCAHPO).

For Winter 2020, there are currently 15 first-year students and 10 second-year students in the program. Since 2011, 112 students have graduated from the program. Students combine class time with clinical externships at a wide variety of clinical sites.

HFC COT program has 100% employment rate

According to Dr. Kathy Campbell, HFC COT Program Director, there are 19 clinical externship sites in Southeast Michigan where students have been mentored. HFC has an affiliation agreement with Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, as well as the Beaumont Health System and several private practices.

Graduates are in high demand. The COT program has a 100 percent employment rate.
