Middle school students from various schools participated in Camp Henry's second Middle School Environmental Science Camp.

As part of Camp Henry, the HFC School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) and the HFC Biology Department held its second Middle School Environmental Science Camp July 9-10. Students hiked in the woods, tested soil and water, examined pond water under microscopes, created a green herbicide (weed killer), and so much more. And they had a blast doing it!

Thanks to the support of the Introductory Biology Lab Manual Committee, eight scholarships were awarded covering the cost of camp:

  • One by support staff
  • One by biology adjunct faculty
  • Six across the district

Scholarships included an application and essay expressing interest in Environmental Science. Winners hailed from Advanced Technology Academy in Dearborn, Quest Charter Academy in Taylor, Riverside Middle School in Dearborn Heights, and STEM Middle School in Dearborn.

Extra focus was placed on environmental stewardship and responsibility, since this was a particularly enthusiastic and eco-conscious group. This camp was designed and run by biology instructor Mary Parekunnel and biology lab associate Zac Polzin.
