Student Nursing Association Wins Awards

Students holding award certificate

The HFC Student Nursing Association (SNA) was well-represented at the 2015 Michigan Nursing Student Association (MNSA) Annual Convention in Lansing last month, winning two awards.

The first was a Fundraising Award. The second was an individual award of $500 called “The Future Florence Award,” which was given to Alex Sciacca, a first year nursing student at HFC. During the conference, SNA Faculty Advisor Peggy Kearney also presented a student breakout session: “So You Want to be a Pediatric Nurse?”

Additionally, HFC alumnus Christopher Mullen served as keynote speaker at the convention and presented “My Nursing Career, Is It My Job?” A Detroit native and Redford Union High School alumnus, Mullen served in the U.S. Army initially as a combat medic. He earned his associate degree in Emergency Services from the City College of Chicago, while serving as a drill instructor at Ft. Knox, Ky.

After completing his associate degree in Nursing from HFC, he went on to earn his undergraduate degree in Nursing from The University of Michigan (U-M) and his graduate degree in Nursing from the University of Phoenix. He is a member of the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA), the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT), the National Association of Flight Paramedics (NAFP) and the Air Surface Transport Nurses Association (ASTNA). Mullen currently possesses active state licenses as a registered nurse (RN), paramedic and paramedic instructor. “I am so proud of the students in the HFC SNA. These students have done so much for the community and exemplify what the nursing profession is about,” said Susan Shunkwiler, HFC associate dean of the Health Sciences Division.
